Project Specific Mapping Notes

  • This project is mainly to improve the road network in the affected area
  • Task squares are large to help with mapping roads and reduce conflicts.
  • Most roads are mapped using TIGER imported data, which usually needs to be better aligned to imagery and have the road classifications change. This OSM wiki page has some notes about improving TIGER data
  • Please add missing residential roads and tracks.
  • Do not over map paths, stick to significant tracks and main paths only
  • Please do not alter any mapping you do not understand or do not see on imagery - Many paths and trails have been mapped by local mappers, do not remove any because you can not see them in imagery. Focus on fixing misaligned roads and adding missing roads.
  • Spread out! Try to select task squares that do not have anyone actively mapping near by to avoid conflicts
  • Save/Upload Data often to help avoid conflicts
  • Using validation in JOSM can help identify road network problems (de-select anything,
  • The below imagery sources can be helpful identifying missing roads and paths/tracks that should be mapped (available in JOSM)
  • U.S. Forest Service roads http://osm.cycle.travel/forest/{zoom}/{x}/{y}.png
  • USGS Topographic Maps http://{switch:a,b,c}.tile.openstreetmap.us/usgs_scanned_topos/{zoom}/{x}/{y}.png
  • TIGER 2012 Roads Overlay http://{switch:a,b,c}.tile.openstreetmap.us/tiger2012_roads_expanded/{zoom}/{x}/{y}.png
  • New & Misaligned TIGER Roads (2015) http://{switch:a,b,c}.tiles.mapbox.com/v4/enf.e0b8291e/{zoom}/{x}/{y}.png?access_token=pk.eyJ1Ijoib3BlbnN0cmVldG1hcCIsImEiOiJhNVlHd29ZIn0.ti6wATGDWOmCnCYen-Ip7Q

Roads and Paths

  • Please map roads and major paths as completely as possible by connecting them to the main road networks where ever possible.
  • Very short segments that do not connect to anything should not be mapped.
  • Short segments of a road or path that you cannot see through the trees but seem very likely to exist should be mapped to keep the road complete
  • Always connect roads to other roads where they meet and never end roads on Residential area polygon edges.

Water

  • Please map lakes, ponds and swimming pools
  • Swimming pools should get "leisure=swimming_pool" tag, iD users can select and search box "swimming" to find the tag.
